This sculpture is a portrayal of the original image of La Bocca della Verita (Mouth of Truth), an ancient stone mask from the Classical period that represents a river god with an open mouth, wide eyes and a flowing mane of hair. The original is located in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome, Italy.
The most famous characteristic of the Mouth is its role as a lie detector. Starting from the Middle Ages, it was believed that if one told a lie with one's hand in the mouth of the sculpture, it would be bitten off.
